A big thanks to Jason Crump
It is sad to see one of speedway's all time greats retire from the Grand Prix series at the end of this year.
Although three time world champion Jason Crump will continue racing in the leagues he will make his final Grand Prix appearance in the Polish Grand Prix next weekend.
Crump goes down as the most successful rider in Australian history having lifted the title in 2004, 2006 and 2009 as well as leading his team to glory in the World Cup in 1999, 2001 and 2002.
His last race in the Grand Prix series will bring the curtain down a stellar career and he will certainly want to go out on a high.
Crump at times has looked like he could challenge for a fourth world title this year but injuries have took their toll and that could be partly the reason why he has called it a day.
I’ve always liked Crump and that was vindicated when he announced his retirement this week as not to take the headlines away from the winner of this year’s championship and I’ve always felt I need to support not least of all because he is a fellow ginger.
But Crump leaves the Grand Prix series with Australian hopes in safe hands with Chris Holder currently leading the series by two points and Darcy Ward being tipped to make a huge impact and if and when he join the field, which is expected to be sooner rather than later.
IT has been coming all this season but a wild card has finally won a Grand Prix round.
Most of the wild card picks this year have excelled regularly reaching the semi finals and finals of events and beating some of the more established names but just missing out when it really mattered.
But Michael Jepsen Jensen put that record to bed when he won the Nordic Grand prix at Vojens last weekend a track where he learnt his trade.
The final was a joy to behold as MJJ, who has set the Elite League on fire this year with his performances for Peterborough, chased down three time champ Nicki Pedersen to pass him on the second bend of the final lap to snatch the gold medal.
Although the night belonged to the Dane Pedersen’s 20 points has pulled himself within two points of Grand Prix series leader Chris Holder which should lead to a thrilling climax at Torun next week.
And with current world champion Greg Hancock in third anything can happen.
Will we have the young pretender hold his nerve and win his first world championship and or will the wily old foxes of Pedersen and Hancock show their experience and get another world title under their belts.
Only time will tell but I for one can’t wait for the final round to see who the title will go to as it is sure to be a thrilling edge of your seat contest.
