Call to dual A69 road after head-on crash near Brampton

A man remains seriously ill in hospital today after a horrific head-on crash which shut the busy A69 road in Cumbria for hours.
The accident – involving a 4X4 vehicle and a bin lorry east of Brampton – has reignited calls for the key route to be upgraded to dual-carriageway.
A 43-year-old man cut free from a silver Nissan X-Trail by firefighters and taken from the scene in an air ambulance, remains in Newcastle General Hospital with serious head and body injuries.
His condition has been described as serious but stable.
A woman and a two-year-old-child, who were also travelling in the vehicle and were thought to be relatives, escaped serious injury.
They were both taken to Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary for check-ups, as was the driver of the bin lorry, a 46-year-old man from Carlisle. The truck was a Cumbria Waste Management vehicle.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
The crash happened at around 1.50pm on Saturday at the Naworth Crossroads and has reinforced calls for the road – the main route between Carlisle and Newcastle – to be upgraded to a dual carriageway.
Brampton parish council chairman Judith Pattinson said: “It certainly needs to be upgraded, that’s a widely held view.
“It’s only going to get worse, it’s not got better over the years. I can’t understand why there are so many accidents at Low Row, it’s a dreadful, dreadful thing. I’ve seen reports over the years about the need for it to be upgraded, it’s just finding the money.
“But you can’t put a price on people’s lives - it needs to be done.”
Diversions were put in place and the road remained closed until 8pm on Saturday while emergency services cleared the scene and an investigation into the cause of the crash began.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact with them to do so on 0845 3300247.
Another serious accident happened on the A66 at Troutbeck, near the Dockray Ullswater Crossroads, yesterday which left a 22 year-old with serious arm injuries.
The man's green Honda moped was involved in a collision with a silver Toyota Landcruiser, driven by a 71-year-old man from Keswick, at about 4.15pm.
The road was cleared about 5.30pm but caused serious delays to motorists on the route.
