Chris aims to bring cool city-style bar to Furness

A NEW bar is set to bring a taste of the big city to Dalton.
Former Dowdales School pupil Chris Shaw is hoping to revolutionise the drinking scene in the ancient capital of Furness with his new bar, ‘20’.
Fresh from studying a degree in business at Northumbria University, the 23-year-old is in the process of transforming former restaurant The Loft into a ‘quirky’ inner city-style bar.
Mr Shaw spent the last year working in a cocktail bar and says he intends to be a hands-on boss when the bar opens later this month.
He said: “I’m looking to cater for a variety of drinkers during the week, but for the bar to be cheap enough for the younger people to drink in at the weekends.
“I think the reason people go to the pubs is because there aren’t many other options in Dalton.
“A lot of people would rather move on to somewhere else after the pub but there isn’t anywhere else for them to go.
“I’ve heard a lot of people go through to wine bars in Ulverston, from Dalton, but if there was something like that in the town, they wouldn’t have to go that far.
“When you hear people talk about going to Manchester for a night out and there being cool bars, I think there is no reason why I can’t bring that to Dalton.”
Once its makeover is complete, Mr Shaw says the bar will appeal to revellers looking for a ‘funkier’ night out, through its blend of mood lighting and music choice, not to mention a host of flaming or fruity cocktails.
He said: “I’d been in Newcastle for four years at university then since I came back, I’ve been working in a cocktail bar. This has been something that I’ve always fancied doing but never thought I could.
“I’ve got ideas for different cocktails, and I’m going to focus on the idea of sharing cocktails, like three or four people around one cocktail.”
Once open, the new bar will span two floors and have a mixture of different theme nights throughout the week.
