DO YOU REMEMBER: Dalton Bypass

DO you remember when the Dalton bypass was built?
Campaigners fought bravely and relentlessly for the bypass, in a bid to cut road accidents and traffic coming through the town.
For the first time, you can see some of our library archive pictures from 1993, when the battle was won and work began building the new road.

I am one of the scruffy looking kids on the march along with Joanne Porter and Debbie Taylor. I think it was Joanne's mam Jane who started the campaign. I was actually knocked over on the old zebra crossings outside the post office in the 70's. Traffic has increased enormously since then, imagine dalton without a bypass today.

Have your say
I remember going on that march for the bypass as a young lad back in the early 80s. It was after a young lad lost his arm in his buggy when his mam was walking up Ulverston Rd with him. Lorries used to thunder along Market St all day long.
