Historic Dalton pub set to get a new lease of life as flats

A FORMER pub which closed due to declining sales could be converted into flats.
Plans to convert the former Cavendish Arms in Market Place, Dalton, into four self-contained flats are set to go before Barrow Borough Council’s planning committee next week.
The pub was closed in May 2009, and the owners of the building, brewery Frederic Robinson Ltd, said it would be financially unviable for it to reopen.
The Grade II listed building is situated within the Dalton conservation zone, however planning officer Charles Wilton has recommended that the planning permission should be granted.
In a report prepared for the committee, he said that the plans should be allowed and listed building consent should be granted so long as the old building is preserved.
He concluded: “In reaching the decision to grant listed building consent subject to conditions, the borough council have paid special regard to the desirability of preserving the building or setting or any features of special architecture or historic interest it possesses.
“The council has concluded that the decision accords with the development plan and national guidance.”
As part of its application, Robinson’s submitted figures to show the dramatic drop in trade suffered at the pub, which was first opened in 1855.
In 2000, the pub sold the equivalent of 223 barrels of alcohol. By 2005 this had dropped to 149 and in 2008 it was only 31 barrels.
Studies carried out as part of the application have revealed there has been a pub at the site at least since the beginning of the 1800s and that the building may even date back to medieval times.
Several objections have been received to the plans from residents of Market Place, who have raised issues with parking. The Victorian Society and Georgian Society were also consulted as part of the plans, and have said they have no major objections after plans originally submitted in November last year were revised earlier this year.
The committee will vote on the plans and is due to meet at Barrow Town Hall on Tuesday at 2.30pm.
