Lights, camels, action in Dalton
Published at 10:26, Tuesday, 04 December 2012
THOUSANDS of people were feeling festive at Dalton’s lights switch-on.
The Christmas capital of Furness was a winter wonderland as live camels transported the Three Wise Men through the town, with Santa on his reindeer-pulled sleigh.
The Bread and Butter theatre company entertained crowds with a Christmas cracker, before Councillor Barry Doughty officially turned on the lights of the town’s Christmas tree.
There was more than a little Yuletide cheer on show as crowds flocked to Tudor Square and lined the parade route.
The sound of festive favourites, including Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, filled the air as the parade made its way through Market Street.
The event, organised by Reverend Allan Mitchell, Dalton Town Council and supported by Rotary International, drew thousands of people into the town.
Turning on the lights, Cllr Doughty said: “I’d like to thank all of you for attending and all of the helpers, especially the Rotarians.
“We have support from three clubs in South Cumbria but I’d particularly like to thank Barrow who provide our two Christmas trees.”
Among the revellers braving the winter chill was 16-year-old Sarah Docker, of Sandringham Close, Barrow, with her friend Anya Maginness.
Miss Docker said: “This is the first time I’ve come to the parade. I was really impressed – the best bit was the live camels. I’d never seen one before.”
Dave Wilson, of Shelley Drive, Barrow, visited with his wife Helen and daughters Brooke and Robin.
He said: “We come every year, it’s a good family event. The girls have enjoyed seeing Father Christmas and singing some Christmas carols.”
Cllr Doughty added: “It’s absolutely amazing for a town of this size to get so many people out. It’s great to see people entering the real spirit of Christmas.”
