Medieval celebration cancelled

A TOWN’S medieval celebrations have been cancelled.
The Dalton Medieval Market will not go ahead on May 30 due to a lack of cash and organisers.
Neil McDougall, a member of the Dalton Traders and Business Association, which runs the event, said Dalton Town Council’s decision to refuse funding was the “final nail in the coffin.”
He said: “There is not enough members and the funding is not there for us to run it.
“It is certainly cancelled for this year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that is the end of it.
“Whether it was to reinvent itself the following year is undecided.
“It’s a bit of a blow for everybody.
“It’s disheartening for all the traders who have successfully run this event for several years now.
“Last year’s was possibly the biggest attendance that we’ve ever had.
“And the Dalton Traders and Business Association never received one complaint about the event.
“A lot of traders who have been involved with the event for a number of years will obviously be missing out this year, and a lot of the local traders will miss out too.
“It was a good event for the whole community.
“I know more than anybody that there were certain stalls that were not medieval-themed, but it was supposed to be a family fun day as well.”
A statement from Dalton Town Council said: “Councillors are obviously disappointed that the medieval market will not be going ahead this year but are hopeful that the traders will be able to attract more members to the association to ensure that the event can resume next year.
“With some forward planning and an early approach to the Dalton Town Council for funding, we are confident that the traders association will be able to organise a very successful event for 2012.”
