Parking crackdown gets under way with patrols

A MAJOR crackdown on inconsiderate parking in a town centre has begun.
Dalton police, along with the parking enforcement officers at the Barrow Borough Council, have stepped up patrols around Dalton town centre in a bid to stop motorists causing an obstruction when they park their cars.
Police will be issuing fixed penalty notices of up to £60 to motorists who are causing an obstruction to traffic with their parking.
And the borough’s traffic wardens can issue tickets of up to £70 for people caught parking on double yellow lines, in a loading bay or outstaying the allotted time limit on certain parking bays.
PC Michelle Milburn, of Dalton police, is urging motorists to be more responsible with their parking.
She said: “We have been to the community meetings where it was decided that parking in the town centre and outside schools was to be the new community priority for Dalton North.
“Parking has always been an issue in Dalton because it is a small town and it was never designed for the amount of traffic it receives.
“The streets are just too small to cope with the amount.
“People are abandoning their cars in unsuitable places. For people in wheelchairs, when people park on the pavement, it causes problems.
“Also, there are a limited number of disabled bays and when someone who is not disabled parks there, they are taking them away from the people who need them.
“There can also be a lot of congestion around Tudor Square and people parking around it creates a problem because drivers can not get out of the junction and it causes chaos.
“We’re calling for people to be more aware of where they are parking and to think of how it will affect traffic.
“We’re stepping up our efforts because the situation is getting worse and people are not responding. There will be extra patrols in the problem areas.”

Dicky if Dalton residents did ever have to pay to park in their own streets don't be fooled into thinking that the money generated from this would go back into BARROW borough council providing anything of benifit for Dalton. The roads, street lights, childrens parks pavements etc in Dalton are a disgrace but the town constantly gets overlooked for improvements and always will...The ancient capital of Furness deserves better

Have your say
Daltonian I agree with you,but get talking to your local councillors, ask them embarrasing questions about the state of Daltons Streets and the lack of cleanliness and future parking plans.
Tell your Local Councillors, you want their reply in writing, not verbal.
Get family friends and neighbours to start asking for answers by written letter.
Councillors have a duty of care to their electorate and they must act for you on their behalf, regardless of political persuasion.
Our lethargic councils are in need of a big shake up to their High Paying saleries and pensions to some council workers, with money taken away from local coffers, that should be spent on the local communities.
A council officer who earns £100.000 per year,if he was paid £80.000,that £20.000 COULD BE USED TO EMPLOY ANOTHER TOWN CLEANER
OR OTHER WORKER TO HELP IN THE BETTERMENT OF
LOCAL LIFE.
