Rain playing havoc with cricket schedules

WET weather is threatening to play havoc with the cricket fixture schedules as the season nears the business end.
With rain having forced the postponement of many games over the past few weekends, important cup matches are having to be hastily rearranged, with fewer free dates available as August approaches.
The North Lancs and Cumbria League’s Vigodny Cup final between Haverigg and Seascale is set to take place at Millom CC this Sunday – a date and venue originally pencilled in for the T-20 Grand Finals day.
The new date for the T-20 showpiece has still to be finalised, but with the Higson Cup final taking place the following Sunday (August 1) and the North Lancs League XI in Readers’ Inter-League final action away to the Manchester Cricket Association the week after, the competition probably won’t be held until mid to late August.
Meanwhile, Millom are still waiting to find out who they will face in the Higson Cup final, with Cleator and Haverigg’s semi-final having been washed out twice, and they will try again tomorrow with a 2pm start in West Cumbria – weather permitting of course.
Another game yet to be played is the Furness Cricket Association Melville Cup final between Lindal B and Furness B, which also fell victim to the weather at Pennington Lane on Sunday. That game is also in the process of being rescheduled.
North Lancs League umpires secretary Terry Atkinson said of the T-20 finals: “The problem is we’ve got the Vigodny Cup final this Sunday, and then the following week it’s the Higson Cup, and then the week after it’s the Inter-League final.
“We’re running out of Sundays because games have been getting wiped out because of the weather.”
The rain also put paid to Cumberland’s three-day Minor Counties Eastern Division clash with Cambridgeshire at Ernest Pass.
